She is the Grande Dame of Lake Como, for over a century she has majestically gazed out over the lake. She is the only hotel we have made a lady, she has played host to the most glamorous visitors to the lake including Greta Garbo who has a suite named after her and we think she is perfect.
Still owned by the same family, and now overseen by the dynamic granddaughter Valentina who has lovingly updated all the bedrooms, there is not one we would not be happy to stay in. Each floor has a different colour scheme, they are old fashioned and comfortable with large marble bathrooms and every amenity you can think of. Despite the grandeur (there are 84 rooms) she still retains a wonderfully cosy, comforting feel – most of the smiling staff have worked there for generations and live and breath for the hotel.
The hotel is in the perfect location to explore the lake, the village of Bellagio is just a short hop across the water – perfect for an evening passeggiata with the locals followed by an aperitivo at one of the many cafes that dot the lake shore. Lounge lizards, fear not. There is the floating pool and ‘beach’ with its own little club and bar for a light lunch. At the back of the hotel is another pool with a pizza bar making it ideal for small people who can spend hours exploring the manicured gardens that wind themselves gently up the mountain to a marvellous vantage point which on a clear day you can see most of the lake. If the weather is unkind, the spa is superb and even on a cold winters evening the restaurant terrace is cleverly insulated so one can eat ‘al fresco’ even if a light drizzle or even snow is falling on the lake.
The Grand Hotel Tremezzo oozes glamour, you want to dress up in the evening and head to the bar for a perfectly mixed whisky sour before dinner on the terrace. The service is out of this world with fantastic staff and a restaurant where the food more than matches the surroundings.
