The Hotel Algilà is a sweet little 30-room hotel overlooking the sea on the historical island of Ortygia. Located in a restored palazzo, once home to an important nobleman, the interiors are filled with centuries old antiques and sculpture.

The bedrooms err on the small side, but are filled with light and most offer views of the sea. The pretty bathrooms are all different, with colourful Sicilian tiles and teak furniture and stocked with Bulgari products.

The staff, especially Sabrina in reception, are extremely helpful and there is a generosity of spirit that some of the larger hotels in the area are unfortunately lacking. The mini bar is complimentary as are Wi-Fi and bicycles to explore the island.

One of our favourite food markets in Sicily is just a short stroll away, along with a fabulous delicatessen for lunch and dinner, or even better a bespoke picnic.
